Our first music interview of 2024 is with indie pop and rock band The Horn who recently released their debut album People Like Us and last month supported Scouting For Girls on their UK tour.
Band Name: The Horn
Members: Jonny Taylor (singer and guitarist), Nick True (bassist), Danny Monk (multi-instrumentalist), Ed Cox (keyboardist) & Alex Moorse (drummer)
Genre: Indie pop and rock
Founded: 2020
Originated From: North London, England, UK
Discography: People Like Us (Album, 2023)
How would you describe your music?
We are an indie pop and rock band and our sound can be defined as Britpop-infused indie-rock that fizzes with energy and angst.
Wrapped up in our band’s hedonistic tales of London life, cautionary tales of growing up and the dismissal of being held back by rules, self-doubt or authority figures is a deeper meaning.
What is your musical creative process like?
Nick tends to bring in lyrics and Jonny works with him on the melody – then Danny on the textures, but sometimes that swaps around.
How did the band form?
Our founder Nick was originally part of the 1980s band Friends of Gavin (who toured with REM and headliner The Smiths’ first London show).
He found Danny in Baker Street and brought his songs along. Then Danny asked Jonny to come in and sing. We got our friends Alex and Ed to play drums and keys. Now we’re a five-piece.
Who influenced you within the music industry?
Tame Impala, Father John Misty, The Clash – to name a few.
Have you performed live much and what was your favourite gig to play at?
We supported Starsailor in 2022 and last year we did nine dates with Scouting For Girls. Best gig possibly Bournemouth O2 or Roundhouse. Amazing crowds.
What is the best thing about being in a band?
The camaraderie.
What’s the biggest problem you’ve had to overcome so far as a musician(s)?
Too many ideas.
What plans have you got coming up in the coming year?
Hopefully a European tour.
What is your ultimate dream as a band?
To play with David Bowie (when he was alive) and to one day play the Hollywood Bowl.
