Today we speak to alternative metal band Novacrow who share their love of performing live and how a dictionary inspired their band name.
Band Name: Novacrow
Members: Kitty (Lead Vocals & Guitar), Jonyx (Lead Guitar) & Freddy (Bass and Backing Vocals)
Genre: Alternative Metal
Founded: September 2013
Originated From: Liverpool, Merseyside, UK
Discography: Fight The Horde!!! (Single), Black Syrup (EP), Criminal Mastermind (EP), Bow Down (Single), The Mantra Acoustic (Single), Hollow Armour (Single), Day Break (Single) & Look At Me Now (Album)
How would you describe your music?
Like playing with a newborn puppy – it’s pretty great!
What is your musical creative process like?
Usually, Kitty and Freddy will send demos to each other until somehow a song is birthed out of one of these exchanges. That’s pretty much how the entirety of our upcoming album Look At Me Now was created anyways.
How did the band form?
Out of a collective drive from each band member to flex their egos. What better way than to get on a stage and make obnoxiously loud noises for a half hour at a time?
How did you come up with your band name?
Jonyx was reading the dictionary one day, trying to learn big boy words, when he stumbled upon the words “Nova” and “Crow”. He thought that would make an awesome band name. And he couldn’t have been more right about that.
Who influenced you within the music industry?
We all have different musical influences, but we’re very much influenced by bands that don’t take themselves too seriously: Type O Negative, Mastodon, Devin Townsend, GWAR – those kinda guys.
Have you performed live much and what was your favourite gig to play at?
We have been touring across the UK consistently since the formation of the band. We’ve played some major festivals such as Metal Days, Winter Days of Metal, Hard Rock Hell Ibiza, and Bloodstock amongst a few others, and they’re always a treat!
What is the best thing about being in a band?
Probably the fact that touring so much and playing in so many different cities, you end up seeing some crazy shit. Like the time Freddy saw a huge slug that turned out to be two separate slugs. In fact, let us change our answer – our favourite thing about being in a band is the slugs.
What’s the biggest problem you’ve had to overcome so far as a musician(s)?
The fact that when it comes to admin stuff like promotion, editing videos, handling social media, none of us in the band have got the slightest clue what we’re doing. I’d say about 90% of being in a band is to try stuff and see what works, whilst 10% of it is actually working on the music.
What plans have you got coming up this year?
We released our debut album Look At Me Now last September. Since then we’ve been back to playing a lot more shows across the country and spreading the good word of Novacrow.
What is your ultimate dream as a band?
We want to keep doing this until we have our own Wikipedia page, and a separate page for each band member.
You can find out more about Novacrow by visiting their website and following them on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
