Personal Statement

I am a very determined individual, eager to learn and work hard both independently and with other people. I have excellent communication skills and a very good memory, which makes me trustworthy, organised and efficient. I have a creative mind and able to make informed decisions and come up with imaginative ideas. I am patient, have a good sense of humour and can adapt to any situation.

My experiences include freelance writing, blogging and creating multimedia content. I also have an undergraduate degree in journalism.

Freelance & Voluntary Work

Hampshire Champion at AccessAble (November 2018 – present)

AccessAble is an organisation that provides accessible guides to disabled people. I am a member of the AccessAble Champions team who create blog and vlog entries promoting the organisations services. I focus on areas relating to the county of Hampshire.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities:

• Analysing and reviewing the quality of the AccessAble website and app.

• Writing up blog entries reviewing the use of accessibility guides in Hampshire.

• Filming and editing vlog entries reviewing the use of accessibility guides in Hampshire.

• Use social media to promote AccessAble services

• Suggest to the management team venues and public places in Hampshire that should have an access guide available.

Blogger at Rock For Disability (December 2017 – present)

I have created my own blog called Rock For Disability. I write blog posts on lifestyle, disability, advice pieces, music news, reviews and interviews plus multimedia content.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

• Independently designing my blog and problem solve technical issues using WordPress.com.

• Securing over 1500 followers.

• Uploading and editing original images and videos.

• Connecting with other bloggers to exchange guest blog posts.

• Connecting with a PR company to write up original music content.

• Using social media platforms to promote my blog content.

Writer at Disability Horizons (September 2012 – present)

Disability Horizons is an online lifestyle magazine run by a team of volunteer writers and is aimed to support, advise and entertain the lives of all disabled people.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

• I have published over 100 articles for the magazine covering a range of topics including technology, travel, employment, entertainment, news and opinion pieces.

• I’ve secured and conducted a variety of interviews with people including BBC weather presenter Lucy Martin, Shadow Minister for Disability, Marsha De Cordova MP, TV presenter Sophie Morgan and actor RJ Mitte.

• I’ve gained paid freelance writing opportunities with partnership companies Iansyst, Lifton, Nimbus Disability and Revitalise.

• I’ve attended disability-related events as Disability Horizons’ reporter including Team BRIT’s disabled racing academy launch & the Outstanding Attitude Awards 2019.

• I organised the guests for our first digital panel plus wrote up a press release to promote the event.

• I’ve helped upload products to our new Disability Horizons online shop

Content Advisory Group Member at MDUK (March 2017 – April 2020)

The Content Advisory Group is a voluntary, representative body for the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK). The charity supports disabled people living with muscle-wasting conditions in the UK.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

• Review the projects and content being considered for the charity.

• Make sure they meet the key community groups and target audiences.

• Suggest improvements and amendments to projects.

• Attend an annual meeting to reflect on our previous work, plan and share ideas for future projects and interact and bond with other team

Independent Distributor at Kleeneze (April 2017 – November 2017)

In this position, I was a self-employed social media operator for the retail company Kleeneze.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

• Advertising products on social media sites.

• Editing product images on Adobe Photoshop.

• Distributing products to customers and negotiating payments.

Freelance Writer at Absolute Healthcare (July 2016 – October 2016)

Absolute Healthcare is a local care provider based in Four Marks, Hampshire where I carried out freelance work in the marketing Department.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

• I wrote up various articles, advertisements, flyers and brochures to promote their different care services.

• I wrote an article giving a client’s perspective of the company’s service and how it has benefited the client.

• I wrote an article giving the perspective of a fictional carer but using stories from real carers who work at the company.

Writing & editorial work at The Portsmouth News (15th-19th July 2013 & 15th-19th June 2015)

I got the chance to attend work experience placements at The Portsmouth News offices in North Harbour.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

• I wrote up stories from press releases (one of which about Japanese navy ships visiting Portsmouth Harbour got published in print and online).

• Edited and uploaded videos online

• Attended a council meeting.

• I was credited in one story about a schoolgirl who made a Titanic replica. I managed to conduct the interview with the child’s mother, gather the information and write up the story independently.

Awards & Certificates

• In July 2017, I was awarded second place at the Mencap Journalism Awards 2017 for my radio documentary looking at the attitudes towards disability. Mencap is UK charity which supports the lives of people with a learning disability. This competition was aimed at young, amateur journalists pursuing a career in the journalism industry.

• While studying my A-Levels at Alton College, I received the Harry Marshal Film Award for my work in Film Studies.

Hobbies & Interests

• I enjoy acting and have joined various theatre groups over the past 15 years. I’m currently a member of an adult drama group at the West End Centre in Aldershot.

• I have a big passion for music and love attending musicals, concerts and festivals.

• I regularly watch and listen to a variety of media programmes/films such as news, drama, documentary and entertainment.

• I read a variety of novels. In particular romance, general & contemporary, autobiographies and adventure/fantasy.
