For this gig, I took the plunge and travelled to the Welsh city of Cardiff which is the current home of my best friend. Alternative rock band, The Kooks, were playing at the Motorpoint Arena in the city. Luckily the venue was walking distance from the hotel but as it was winter, we had to wrap up warm.
I found this show is very topsy-turvy with a lot of surprises in the set list.
They opened with Eddie’s Gun and the third song wastheir newest single Be Who You Are. I was slightly disappointed that the band didn’t extend the “Bah, bah, bahs” for the audience to join in with an acapella segment.
Around twenty minutes into the show, a curve ball struck when they began to play She Moves In Her Own Way. I strongly thought that this song would have been the final track of the night. Instead, that was given to the song Naive.
I found out that the lead singer, Luke Pritchard’s Father passed away when he was younger and had written a song dedicated to him called See Me Now. It was a solo piece performed by Luke on the piano under a Single spotlight. It was very emotional and moving. The song was about what his Father would think of his son now.
When the acoustic guitar came out, I was initially excited as I thought they were about to play the song Seaside. However I was surprised to find out that instead they’re playing another unfamiliar song to me, See the Sun. Seaside was later played after the encore.
The access of the venue was really good. There was no need for me to go through security (perks of being disabled), simply went up a lift to a balcony where there was only one other person in a wheelchair – I felt like a VIP!
